Love, Scandal and Second Chances (Kapoor Brother Series, Book3) ~ Shilpa Suraj

The Kapoor brothers are back and this time it’s Arav’s story. Arav and Disha met in college, where Arav fell in love with Disha. Disha though had ambitions to achieve great things in life. She humiliated Arav, broke his heart and then left Hyderabad, moving to Bombay for work. Arav recovered but his heart was never the same again. Years later, they meet again. Disha wants to give up fame and work to live a simple life but is caught up in complicated entanglements. Arav tries to resist Disha, but in helping her, is unable to stop himself from falling in love with her, again. However, even though he loves Disha, he is not sure if he can forgive Disha for the past. Disha, on the other hand, is scared to trust and fall in love.

Arav and Disha’s story is bittersweet, both are flawed. Arav has not been able to move past the hurtful words spoken by Disha in the past. His heart was broken by Disha and he opts for the arranged marriage route, rather than risk falling in love again. He closes himself off to protect himself from the pain. Disha uses her work to escape from an intolerable life. Her work supported her financially, giving her the means to escape the complications in her life. Her frosty exterior hides a bruised heart, filled with insecurities. She is complicated, grappling with issues in her life, yet sensitive enough to realise that she made a mistake in breaking Arav’s heart. Her past experience has made her afraid of falling in love with Arav.

What I loved about the Kapoor Brother series was how relatable the characters were. We all have a bit of Arav and Disha in us, struggling with our insecurities and hurts. You know Arav and Disha are flawed, they have a lot of issues to work out, yet you cannot help but root for them. The chemistry between Arav and Disha is sizzling, they feel the mandatory “tingle” for each other. ( If you have read the first two books you will realise how important the “tingles” are!)

The book, as with other Kapoor brothers books, is funny. You are chuckling at the dialogues and the incidents (look out for the incident when Disha eats a chocolate eclair). The pièce de résistance was the group WhatsApp conversation, it had me howling with laughter. Alisha-Vivaan, Suraj-Vihaana, make up the emotional backbone of Arav. The interactions between the Kapoor brothers and their better halves are funny, full of love, camaraderie and affection. This time Arav and Vivaan’s mother makes a cameo and keeps the reader in splits! She reminded me of sassy sasuma ( of messy mama and sassy sasuma fame)!

Author Shilpa Suraj has a magic touch when it comes to romances. She picks flawed characters, struggling with their issues and insecurities. With these characters, she spins a story which is funny, romantic and heartwarming. Her characters are endearingly familiar, you sympathize with them, commiserate with them, feel their pain and root for them. The characters do have rocks on the path of true love, but there are no unnecessary dramas to distract the reader from the main story.

Shilpa Suraj makes you believe in love and happily ever afters.

About the Book:

Arav has only ever loved one woman, Disha. But, she broke his heart to further her ambitions.  Years later, she’s achieved everything she set out to but at a steep price. She wants to come home but home doesn’t want her and her work won’t let her. Arav knows Disha needs his help and the boy he once was can’t walk away.  But while his heart is large enough to forgive, it hasn’t forgotten.
Can they overcome the bitter hurt of their shared past, face the scandalous present and find their way back to each other? Is this their second chance at love or a first chance at redemption?
