BlogchatterA2Z(R) ~ Love On A Sunday Morning

“Let’s try this shop!” Juhi said to Madhuri, pointing out the fabric shop.

It had been a week since Jaswinder’s wedding. The two sisters were in the market to buy a gift for Varsha’s upcoming birthday. Varsha had stayed back at home to study for her upcoming final exams.

Inside, the shop was cool and dark. Pushing her sunglasses up, Juhi looked at the rainbow-hued bolts of fabric, trying to decide which one to buy. Madhuri looked at Juhi from the corner of her eye and chewed her lip. For the past week, Juhi had been quiet, lost in her daydreams. Even though she was busy in the office and helping with home chores, Madhuri often saw her staring into space. Her eyes glassy as if she was thinking of something. Or someone.

Madhuri decided to broach the subject on her mind.

“Jaswinder’s wedding was fun, right?” she said casually.

“Hmmm,” replied Juhi, fingering a bolt of green silk.

“And her cousin Jagjit is quite handsome,” Madhuri continued.

Juhi nodded, moving on to the bolt of blue crepe.

“I heard he is still in the village. He has not yet gone back.”

Juhi looked at Madhuri. “Is there a reason for you to tell me all this?”

Madhuri felt her ears burning at Juhi’s sharp tone but decided to stick it out. “I saw you with Jagjit at the wedding. You looked happy, carefree.”

Juhi sighed. “Jagjit was just someone I met at a wedding. Yes, it was light-hearted fun for a few hours. But even you know that our lives are too dissimilar. Don’t overthink too much about it. Now, how about this blue crepe for Varsha? It will go well with the phulkari dupatta we have already purchased.”

Madhuri looked towards the fabric Juhi was holding out. She wanted to ask more questions to Juhi. Her sisterly instinct said Juhi was not revealing the truth, but Juhi’s tone said she didn’t want to discuss the topic any further. And Madhuri didn’t want to poke at something that was clearly hurting Juhi. She loved her sister too much to trouble her.

“Yes, it is good. Let’s get this,” she mumbled.

  1. Oh I wish Madhuri had questioned Juhi more closely. So often we let things go for fear of hurting our near and dear ones and it never works out well.
